The premiere episode of ‘Weh Yuh Know Bout Dancehall’, an exciting television series powered by Magnum Tonic Wine in collaboration with Jussbuss TV, promised a night to remember – and it delivered.
Last Tuesday night (February 18) at 23 Dominica Drive was anything but ordinary. The execution? Noteworthy. The energy? Unmatched. The conversation? All about dancehall.
DJ Squeak set the mood with a genre-spanning selection that had guests vibing through the cocktail hour.
Then came Orane ‘Naro’ Hart from the popular ‘The Fix‘ podcast– a host known for doing the most by bringing his signature cynical yet witty personality to steer the evening’s proceedings. Naro effortlessly guided the crowd through a night that wasn’t just about a new series produced locally; it was about dancehall’s evolution, potential to create more for the economy and future.
According to Brandon Wallace, Magnum Tonic Wine’s brand manager, who laid down the mission, “Magnum has long been a champion of dancehall culture. We’re not just a brand, we’re deeply committed to supporting and elevating the talent that pushes this incredible culture forward. When the team from Jussbuss brought this exciting new initiative to us, it was an easy decision. ‘Weh Yuh Know Bout Dancehall’ isn’t just about entertainment, it’s an educational platform that allows both Magnum and Jussbuss to grow, while shining a spotlight on the heart of dancehall.”
Sheldon Whyte, digital manager at Magnum, reinforced that digital storytelling and authentic cultural narratives were key drivers behind the partnership. And when Jussbuss executives Andrew Jackson and Pierce McLean hit the stage, it became even clearer that ‘Weh Yuh Know Bout Dancehall’ isn’t just a series – it’s history in the making.
But the true highlights of the night? Opportunities for dancehall fans to test their knowledge for a chance to win prizes and Deno Crazy. With his trademark humour and realness, the social media sensation and series host had the crowd locked in, even sparking laughter as he led the giveaways segment.
What sets Magnum-powered TV series apart from others, is its immersive approach.
Shot across iconic dancehall locations – Kingston’s Downtown Waterfront, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios – the series dives deep into the genre’s stories, controversies, and impact.
But here’s the twist: it isn’t just about the music. It’s about the creators, the culture, and the conversations happening in real time.
Poised to become a must-watch for dancehall lovers everywhere, the series premiered on Friday, February 21 at 9:30 pm on TVJ.
Each episode airs twice; first on Fridays and then rebroadcast on Monday afternoons at 1:30 pm – with an expected weekly audience of over one million viewers. Having already gained strong support from the dancehall community, the series features approximately 12 episodes, culminating in a highly anticipated finale on May 9.
As the night wound down, 23 was abuzz that ‘Weh Yuh Know Bout Dancehall’ is primed to become a movement. “This is what dancehall needs to celebrate dancehall’s past, present, and the limitless potential of its future. With Magnum Tonic Wine and Jussbuss at the helm, dancehall’s narrative is in good hands,” said Keanu Gordon, cinematographer and dancehall music producer more popularly known by the moniker ShotbyDeth.
In true dancehall style, the launch came to a close with DJ Squeak returning to the decks, keeping the vibes alive well into the night. One thing’s certain – this is just the beginning. The real question is: ‘Weh yuh know bout dancehall?’
