Jonah Jack was not swallowed by the whale, but he did carry his cross.
The entertainer, who claimed to have received a vision from God earlier this month, buitlt a cross and then carried it on his back from his home on Molynes Road to Half-Way Tree.
“Mi get a message from the Almighty and mi a go deliver it. The date was given to me from a vision and it was June 11, so on that date mi go and deliver it,” he said.
The former Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall winner, who now goes by the moniker Xojay, said there are critics who believe this is a publicity stunt; but he insists otherwise.
“Mi nuh deh here to please man, but God. Mi is an artiste at the end of the day, but God give mi my voice to minister so mi can help the youth dem. It is not a publicity stunt, but believe what you want. So what if it was a publicity stunt? Unno see people out there all the time a glorify the Devil and a put up certain sign and everyone congratulate dem. Because of my belief, mi decide say mi a go use the cross. So why uno a say a mock mi a mock God? Is what? Unnu ‘fraid a di cross?” he asked.
According to Xojay, before he won the Magnum competition in 2013, he promised God that if he was victorious, he would spread the gospel.
“Mi tell Him say mi a go sing Him an album, but little hype get to mi and mi make mistake here and there, and thing just get downhill. A voice keep on a tell mi say mi must find back myself, and mi start sing Him other songs, because mi wah fit in with the crowd because mi did well wah buss,” he said. “When yuh deh pon yuh face and don’t know where to turn, a God we turn to, and that is what I did.” Xojay said he also cleaned up his home life, spending more time with his spouse and children.Desperately in need of the Almighty’s attention, Xojay said he began recording his album, My Album For God, last month. Shortly after, he received the vision to carry his cross to Half-Way Tree.
“Mi just imagine how traumatising that was to people. Mi cross was very, very heavy and mi don’t know how mi carry it so far. Mi not even know how long it take mi, because it was like I was in another world. People a talk, but it come like mi nah hear dem. A when mi watch over the video mi hear even a police a call out to mi. Mi did just a walk,” he said.
Having reached Half-Way Tree Square, Xojay had traffic at a standstill as he put down his cross and lay on it. After laying still for about five minutes, he was approached by the police who demanded to know what was taking place.
“Mi start talk say we need to take back our kids because the children dem gone astray. Mi start tell dem ways how dem must do that, and that dem must get dem house in order so we can have a Jamaica where a village can raise a child,” he said. Footage of the incident shows the barefooted man dressed in all white preaching while the police try to control him.
“Di police ask if mi have permit to do what mi a do, and mi tell him say a God authorise us to do it. Mi still a talk to di people dem same way. Him flash out him baton and mi tell him say mi will sacrifice one of my jawbone fi God di general. Dem put on a handcuff on mi and mi tell him say him must do what him have to. Mi still was there talking because at the end of the day, yuh have to stand for summen,” he said.
Xojay was later released without charge. He walks around with a ‘disciple’ who calls himself Ustayno. He said the Almighty has also spoken to him.
“Whatever role mi get is a direct order from God. I was the only one who agree to walk with him (Xojay) and video, because other people ask him if him mad. A day before the walking, mi tell fada God say mi want to get my purpose because mi a walk and a help people get rich, and mi tired to get ‘back stab’. Di morning when the artiste call mi, God tell mi say dis was mi calling, so mi put on mi clothes faster than lightning and go. God is at work,” he said.
